# Branded PowerPoints with Copilot: Three Ways to Keep Decks On-Brand

Dovetail Staff  ·   6 minute read

Copilot in PowerPoint just didn’t work.

Many people tried it once, spent longer fixing the design than writing the content, and went back to building slides by hand.

In our recent newsletter, we explained why that's no longer the case. Copilot now produces decks that need only a final 10 to 20% of polish, and it can follow your brand when it's set up properly. We use it ourselves for leadership sessions and weekly status reports.

Getting it consistent can be hard. One person with the right template can get a great deck out of Copilot but roll it out to the whole business and you'll have people starting from blank slides, old decks or whatever they saved to their desktop last year. We've been testing three ways to fix that, so here's what each one does and where we'd start.

### Why branding is now also an IT decision

Your client-facing and board decks represent the organisation. When they're off-brand or inconsistent, they look unprofessional, and in regulated sectors that matters even more.

Once Copilot is rolled out, the people building presentations are from all over the organisation from marketing, in finance, sales, operations and project teams, all creating decks with the same tool and very different habits.

So, who owns the brand assets, who can change them and how they reach everyone? Those are governance decisions, are something businesses need to think about.

#### Option 1: Point Copilot at the right template

This is the simplest place to start. Create your deck from your organisation's template, or open a blank copy of an earlier branded deck, and Copilot will use the sample slides, layouts and objects inside it.

Tip: Copilot is only as good as the template. If there aren't enough sample slides, it falls back to the Slide Master and the results get weaker ([Microsoft's guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/powerpoint/copilot/keep-your-presentation-on-brand-with-copilot)). It also relies on people opening the right file.

Most corporate templates were built for people, not for Copilot. So, check your Slide Master is set up properly: correct fonts and colours in the theme, clearly named layouts for each slide type, and placeholders used rather than loose text boxes. Get that right and every deck Copilot builds starts from a solid base.

### Option 2: Set up a Brand kit

It's one place for your approved PowerPoint templates, logos, colours, fonts, images and brand voice, and Copilot applies it when it builds or edits a deck. Change a logo or colour in the kit, republish it, and everyone gets the update.

To create one, go to the Create area in the Copilot app, select More, then Brand Kits, and Create Brand Kit. Add your template first, then your logos, colours and fonts. A new kit starts as a draft, so nobody else sees it until you share and publish it. [Microsoft's Brand Kit guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365-copilot/create-and-manage-official-brand-kits-in-the-microsoft-365-copilot-app) covers each step.

To use it in PowerPoint, select + in the Copilot prompt box, choose Select brand and pick your kit.

![blog\_brandedpowerpoint\_2](https://dovetail.team/hs-fs/hubfs/blogs/PowerPoint_blogseries/blog_brandedpowerpoint_2.png?width=1920&height=1080&name=blog_brandedpowerpoint_2.png)

Kits come in two kinds. Anyone with a licence can build their own and share it with colleagues. An Official kit appears for everyone in the organisation, but only brand managers can publish one, and IT decides who those are through an admin policy. Microsoft's [admin guidance on Brand Kit governance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/copilot/configure-brand-kit-governance-organizational-assets) explains how to set this up, and changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect.

Tip: You need a Microsoft Copilot Premium licence, and someone has to own the kit and keep it current. The kit is also only as good as the template inside it, which is why getting your Slide Master right comes first.

### Option 3: Create a brand skill

A template controls how a deck looks. A skill controls how it's built. It's a saved set of instructions Copilot follows every time, so you can set rules a template can't, such as slide density, title style, tone, where the logo goes, what Copilot must never do, or that every leadership deck ends with decisions and owners.

You can create one in three ways: write the instructions yourself, upload a ZIP file, or record yourself doing the task. For branding, the ZIP route gave us the best results. We put a SKILL.md file with our instructions alongside a branded Dovetail deck. The instructions told Copilot how to build the presentation, and the example deck showed it the layouts and visual style we wanted. Copilot followed our branding well. [Microsoft's brand skill guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/copilot/brand-skill-support-copilot-powerpoint) explains what a brand skill can include.

Skills are personal by default and saved to your OneDrive, so you can share them with your team from there. To roll one out across the organisation, an administrator can [deploy it through the Microsoft 365 admin centre](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/copilot/deploy-organization-skills-for-copilot-in-powerpoint), to everyone or to selected users and groups.

A skill won't guarantee a perfect deck on its own. Test it on a few different presentations before sharing it widely, and keep the rules clear without forcing every deck into the same structure. It also works best alongside a well-built template, not as a replacement for one.

We cover how to write, upload, record and share skills step by step in our [Skills inside of PowerPoint blog.](https://dovetail.team/blog/what-are-copilot-skills-in-powerpoint-a-practical-guide)

Which option should you choose?

You don't have to pick one. The decision depends on how many people build decks and how tightly you need to control the result. Use the table below to find yours.

| If your organisation… | Start with |
| --- | --- |
| Has a small team and a solid template | Master template |
| Wants the brand controlled centrally | Template plus Brand kit |
| Has specific presentation rules or repeated formats, such as board packs or client proposals | Template plus a brand skill |
| Is large or regulated, with many people creating decks | All three, deployed and governed centrally |

The three options build on each other. The template is the foundation, the Brand kit gets it to everyone, and the skill sets the rules for how decks are built.

Whichever route you take, start by fixing the template. A Brand kit or skill built on a weak template will only spread the same problems further.

### Rolling it out across the organisation

Setting this up for one team takes an afternoon. Making it work across the organisation needs a plan, and it needs IT and marketing working together from the start.

1. **Name the owners.** Decide who signs off the brand, who maintains the template and kit, and who in IT controls licences, policies and deployment.
2. **Fix the template.** Have someone with PowerPoint design experience rebuild it for Copilot before anything else is built on top.
3. **Pilot with one team.** Pick a group that builds a lot of decks, such as sales or the PMO, and test the kit and skill on their real work.
4. **Roll out in stages.** Use what the pilot shows you to adjust, then extend access team by team rather than all at once.
5. **Plan for change.** Brands get refreshed and Copilot features change. Set a review cycle and agree who updates the template, kit and skill when they do.

None of this is complicated, but it does take time from people who usually have other priorities.

#### What to always check

Copilot gets you most of the way, but someone still needs to own the final deck. Brand settings control how it looks, not whether it's right.

Before anything goes to a client or the board, check the facts, figures and claims Copilot has added, and make sure no sensitive or client information has been pulled in from source files. Check accessibility too. When we reviewed our Nimbus deck, it had text that was too small and slides without titles.

Review your skill's rules as well. If they're too rigid, every deck starts to look the same, whether it's a board pack or a team update.

## Copilot in PowerPoint has arrived

Not long ago, a Copilot deck meant wrong fonts, generic layouts and an afternoon spent fixing it. That's no longer the problem. Copilot can build decks that look like yours. The challenge now is making that happen for every team, every time.

The organisations that get the most from it will be the ones that set it up properly once: a template built for Copilot, a Brand kit everyone can reach, and clear rules for how decks get built.

Which license do we need for Brand Kits?

Creating and managing Brand Kits needs a Microsoft Copilot Premium licence. See [Microsoft's Brand Kit guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365-copilot/create-and-manage-official-brand-kits-in-the-microsoft-365-copilot-app).

Does this work in the PowerPoint desktop app?

Yes. Copilot, including Brand Kits, works in PowerPoint for Windows, Mac and the web, according to [Microsoft's on-brand guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/powerpoint/copilot/keep-your-presentation-on-brand-with-copilot).

Why does Copilot ignore parts of our template?

Usually because the template doesn't have enough sample slides. Copilot learns mainly from sample slides, then falls back to the Slide Master. Microsoft recommends including slides such as title, agenda, section divider, content, data, timeline, summary and closing.

Who can publish an Official Brand Kit for the whole organisation?

Only brand managers. An administrator names them by adding them to a security group and turning on the Enterprise Brand Manager policy. Changes can take up to 24 hours to apply. See [Microsoft's admin guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/copilot/configure-brand-kit-governance-organizational-assets).

Can Copilot use the brand images we already store in SharePoint?

Yes. You can link a SharePoint Organisation Assets Library to a Brand Kit. Microsoft suggests a large image library with clear names, descriptions and tags so Copilot picks relevant images.
